looking up, looking down

i saw a poster.
on it, the player shown was looking down intently,
in what appears to control a soccer ball.

my first thought:
soccer is a sport that makes a person look down a lot,
people should focus on looking far.
(possibly my usual bias against soccer coming into play here)

my next thought:
wait, actually the good players don't look down much,
controlling the ball has become second nature to them.
and they only glance down occasionally, just to check?
what makes them good, is not just their strong fundamentals,
but because they now have the ability to look far.
to make the incisive pass, the crucial kick, the deciding goal.

my parting thought:
let's all build that foundation now,
so in the future, we can focus not on how the ball gets to the destination,
because that's trivial,
focus on where that destination should be.

on my jukebox and worth a mention:
don't let it go to your head
